I have been searching for a way to obtain a manicuring license with my already very busy schedule for over 10 years. I started doing pedicures and gel manicures in like 2014 but gave up on manicures because I just couldn’t find the level of training I was looking for and my work was not worth the price.
In WA the cosmetology license covers all things hair, some skin care (facial waxing & basic facials) and natural nail care including pedicures. Cosmetologists are not licensed to do nail extensions like acrylic or gel with tips. In order to offer those types of services lawfully one must have a manicurist license.
I want to learn more about all the tools that are available even though I only want to focus on natural nail care. I want to offer services using tools and products that are outside the legal scope of my cosmetology license.
This legally limits my ability to service my natural nail clients. Say for instance someone has a bad break and only need one artificial nail for a short period of time while it grows out. With a manicuring license I could take care of that but with only my cosmetology license I'm legally not allowed to.
Manicurist Tuition is $10,000. The school I found ticked the most boxes. Most important being it’s a hybrid program. 250 of the 600 hours are completed online meaning I can finish in 18 weeks. Next this school was the closest to both my home and my current jobs.
A manicuring license won’t make me good at nails it doesn’t matter what school you go to. You only get good by seeking good training and practicing throughout your career. Beauty schools teach for the state board exam. The state board exam focuses on safety and sanitation not skill.
Im getting a running start on my skills by taking Light Elegance courses and learning to work with the products so when I go to school I’m simply refining my skills and prepping for the exam.
I chose light elegance products and equipment because of their obvious commitment to education. If I need help they are very responsive. Their YouTube channel which is free is such an amazing resource and the way they offer detailed feedback on assignments is giving me life as an instructor myself.
Lines between the licenses can be very muddy. I like moving with confidence and I don’t want anyone in my business questioning me about if I’m allowed to do this or that. So I will pay $10,000 for the license even though I can get the skills for $600🫤.
If you want to help me with tuition you can make a donation here.
If you already made a donation of $50 or more I’d love to thank you with a complementary nail service of your choosing. Please click here to view the donation menu.
